The Brown Betty Cookbook

Modern Vintage Desserts and Stories from Philadelphia's Best Bakery

Mother-daughter team and Brown Betty Dessert Boutique founders Linda Hinton Brown and Norrinda Brown Hayat’s new book features recipes and family stories of Philadelphia’s post-World War II African-American community.

After opening their Brown Betty Dessert Boutique in Philadelphia in 2004, the women were showcased in O Magazine and Rachael Ray named their Strawberry Letter cupcake one of the five best in the country. Seven years later, Brown Betty desserts have been featured in GlamourNational Geographic TravelerDaily Candy, and every major publication in Philadelphia, and the women are ready to share their recipes in their first cookbook.

For Linda Hinton Brown and Norrinda Brown Hayat, baking has always been tied to family; they grew up baking with their mother and grandmother, Betty, and it gave them the benefit of delicious desserts in addition to entertaining family stories. With touching stories intermingled among over 50 recipes (some straight from Betty, some perfected by Linda, and some newly developed for the bakery), vintage photographs, and color dessert photography, the book will take readers on a journey through family history and provide recipes for making scrumptious old-fashioned desserts with modern style.
